Discussion:
Need to find a new home for this mailing list :-(

As some of you may have seen on Twitter or elsewhere, Joyent has rather
controversially ended its commitment to hosting those of its customers
who bought Lifetime accounts:

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/ex-joyeurs

I was one of those Lifetimers :-(

That means that I've got to find a new host for my own blog and a few
other things, but more urgently, I need to find a new home for this
mailing list. This is currently hosted on Joyent and I suspect that it
might be somewhat of a pain to move. Luckily we had already moved the
getontracks.org site off Joyent on to Github, so we don't have to sort
that out.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for what we should do? The
problem is that they are just deleting everything at the end of October,
which give me very little time to act (I have a holiday coming up in
just over a week, and then the very busy start of term).

The way I see it, we have a few alternatives (not necessarily mutually
exclusive):

* Just find somewhere to archive the old mailing list (static HTML if I
can get it?) and move to a new system
* I could see if I could set up a new mailing list at my new host
(wherever that might be) and try to port it over
* Start afresh and ditch the archives
* something else?

I'm not even sure what's out there in terms of Mailman alternatives?
I've seen a few specialist mailing list providers, but they are
typically set up for large commercial ventures and so are overkill/too
expensive for what we need.

HALP! :-( Any suggestions welcome.

cheers,

See if you can get the mailing list archive as mbox or Maildir. That way it
can always be turned into HTML, or set up as a searchable archive via any
number of simple CGIs.

Going forward... Google Groups? A Redmine instance?

Hi,
If you want i can host archive at free.fr.

Maybe later with time we can make archive mirror.

Just an idea :-P

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - it looks as if Google Groups is
the consensus, and the links above will be very useful.

One slight wrinkle is that I've now deleted my Google account, so
someone else will need to set up the group (this would make sense anyway
in terms of admin in the future).

I'll look into the exporting/migration side in the meantime.

I have created a group here:

Just let me know where I can assist in the migration.

Excellent, thanks Reinier! I'll take a look at what needs to be done and
let you know. It may take a little while because I don't have much time
right now and I have a lot of things to juggle with moving my all stuff
off Joyent :-/

Anyway, it looks from the links that Nicholas sent that it ought to be
possible for me to give you the exported archives to dump in the new
Google group, then I can send out a message on this list, plus set up an
autoresponder, asking people to sign up there and giving notice that the
list is going to close in ~2 months.

Time for Class Action?
I'm assuming that is (supposed to be) humorous.

If you're serious: please, take your litigious suggestions away from an
Open Source discussion list.

Hi Keith,

Yes, that was (supposed to be) humorous. Next time I'll add a smiley.

But while you are on your soapbox, let me point out that I am also a big
advocate of Linux and the GPL, a big fan of people like bsag who create
excellent open source software such as Tracks, and that most of the open
source advocates I am friends with are British and politically left-wing.
To them, the idea of a Class Action against a company who
unilaterally reneges on a promise made to initial investors, without whom
they might not have existed, would seem an appropriate measure.
Which, according to Wikipedia, is already pending.

Regards,
Andy

Andy and Keith,

You both feel strongly about this (on opposite sides), but I don't think
it's a productive discussion to have here. Let's stick to the task in
hand of moving the list safely. That's the only bit of Tracks now
remaining on Joyent (I think! We haven't forgotten anything else, have
we Reinier?), and everything else on there is just my problem ;-)

Thanks to some very helpful suggestions and kind offers of help from
various people in this community, it looks as if we're going to be able
to move the list to Google groups, with the archives intact. People will
have to re-register, which is a pain, but hopefully only a one-off pain.

Hi BSAG,

I agree that Joyent-bashing should not be on this list. Go to the Joyent
forum for that please.

AFAICS, the mailing list is the last on Joyent. Dan is making great progress
importing the old messages, so this is almost done!

Excellent news! Huge thanks Dan (and also Reinier) for sorting this out.
Let me know when it's all finished, and I'll set up the autoresponder on
the old list to give people time to make the move before the account is
deleted.
